Cardanol Quality for Phenalkamine: A Buyer’s Guide

Cardanol Quality for Phenalkamine: A Buyer’s Guide

Cardanol quality is an upstream purchasing decision for manufacturers developing phenalkamine epoxy curing agents. The feedstock needs to match the intended chemistry and production process. A material described simply as cardanol may still differ in composition, colour, residual water and physical properties, so an agreed grade specification is essential.

Define the product before comparing offers

Distilled cardanol, refined CNSL and cardanol distillation residue are different streams. Ask the supplier to identify the offered product and processing route. If a composition or purity requirement applies, record the analytical method and calculation basis. A viscosity result or a commercial trade name does not by itself demonstrate a particular cardanol percentage.

Parameters to review with the technical team

  • Composition or cardanol content, when required by the process.
  • Colour, with a defined method and acceptance basis.
  • Water and insoluble matter.
  • Acid value in mg KOH/g, rather than an unspecified percentage.
  • Viscosity and density with their measurement temperatures and methods.
  • Ash and application-relevant elements, together with any required storage or reaction tests.

Read the TDS and COA as different documents

A TDS describes the product and may contain typical values, indicative limits or representative results. A COA reports measurements for an identified lot or sample. Compare results only when the methods, units and test conditions are compatible. For example, dynamic viscosity in cP and kinematic viscosity in cSt need the density at the relevant temperature for conversion; they are not equal merely because both describe flow.

Use DPB data for initial assessment

The DPB Cardanol TDS lists a typical density of 0.94 g/cm³ at 15°C, an indicative kinematic viscosity range of 5–30 cSt at 40°C and acid value below 6 mg KOH/g. These references are useful for initial discussion. They do not replace the offered-grade specification or the shipment COA, and they do not establish the curing performance of a finished phenalkamine formulation.

Qualify a sample before scale-up

Agree the feedstock specification, request a representative sample and test it in the intended manufacturing and formulation workflow. Keep a reference sample and record acceptance criteria. Once the sample is approved, align the commercial lot, packing and COA with the agreed grade. Any change in source, composition or process should be reviewed before use in a previously approved formulation.
