CNSL Biofuel: Industrial Uses, Grades and Quality Checks

CNSL Biofuel: Industrial Uses, Grades and Quality Checks

CNSL biofuel enquiries should start with a clear definition of the material and the intended equipment. Cashew nut shell liquid is a renewable, cashew-derived industrial feedstock. Its suitability as a fuel component depends on the supplied grade, measured quality and customer approval. A renewable origin alone does not establish burner compatibility, transport classification or emissions performance.

Choose the right CNSL grade

Crude CNSL is an input for further processing. Refined CNSL has undergone treatment to improve its quality profile. Degummed CNSL is processed to reduce gums and selected impurities. Cardanol is a distilled fraction, while CNSL residue is the heavier material remaining after distillation. These grades should be purchased against separate specifications. Blended residue should also be identified clearly, because it can behave differently from unblended heavy oil.

Quality checks for industrial fuel evaluation

  • Viscosity at the actual transfer and test temperatures, with cSt or cP clearly identified.
  • Water and sediment, including whether results are expressed by mass or volume.
  • Ash, sulfur and application-relevant elements such as potassium and phosphorus.
  • Flash point and calorific value, including closed/open cup and gross/net basis where relevant.
  • Storage behaviour and compatibility with the receiving tanks, lines and burner.

What the DPB technical data tells a buyer

The DPB Refined CNSL TDS lists indicative limits including acid value ≤ 6 mg KOH/g, sulfur ≤ 300 mg/kg and a flash point ≥ 120°C. The Heavy CNSL TDS records a representative viscosity of 22,090 cSt at 25°C and gross heat of combustion of 9,098.5 kcal/kg. These entries describe different products and data types. A TDS reference is useful for screening; the shipment COA and the agreed specification establish acceptance for the actual lot.

Plan a sample-to-trial purchasing sequence

Define the end use and quality limits, review the offered-grade TDS and SDS, test a representative sample, then agree a controlled trial with the receiving facility. Confirm packing, transfer requirements and the documents needed before commercial shipment. Test results should retain their method, temperature and units so that future consignments can be compared consistently.

Traceability and sustainability documents

Where certified material is required, check the company certificate, its scope and the documentation for the particular consignment. Sustainability certification and product quality analysis serve different purposes. Ask for the documents applicable to the product and supply chain being offered; an overall certificate does not replace a batch COA or an equipment trial.
